Fun colors and fantastic shapes are everywhere in Matlacha (say Maaat-la-shay in your best southern drawl accented with a French swagger). This tiny artist/tourist/fishing community in southwest Florida is a bright spot if you are visiting Ft. Myers or the Sanibel area. A handful of colorful buildings host galleries and shops, some quirky, some typical tourist stuff, but well worth seeking out. One gallery had several featured artists working and available to discuss their craft. Best part of the trip was that I got an unexpected Christmas present–a Steampunk-inspired pendant necklace made with watch parts and a miniature kayak paddler. You just never know what you are going to see on the Florida Gulf Coast.
